History of Monsoon Palace

Maharana Sajjan Singh, the 72nd ruler of Mewar, envisioned the Monsoon Palace as an astronomical center for observing cloud patterns and weather changes. However, his untimely death in 1884 halted the completion of the observatory, and the structure was later used as a summer retreat and royal hunting lodge by the Mewar rulers.

The palace was strategically built on Bansdara Hill, providing a defensive vantage point against enemy invasions and offering unmatched views of Fateh Sagar Lake, Pichola Lake, and Udaipur city.

During British rule, the palace was briefly taken over but was eventually returned to the Mewar royal family. In 1956, it was transferred to the Forest Department and is now part of the Sajjangarh Wildlife Sanctuary.
