Why This Route Matters for Travelers

This new direct flight is especially significant for travelers visiting Varanasi, Sarnath, and the wider Buddhist circuit. Thailand is one of the largest source markets for Buddhist tourism to India, and the new connection makes pilgrimage travel far more convenient by removing the need for connecting flights via Delhi or other hubs.

For Indian travelers, the route provides a simple and affordable way to reach Bangkok, a favorite destination for shopping, nightlife, wellness retreats, and short international holidays.

Strengthening International Connectivity from Tier II Cities

Commenting on the launch, Air India Express Managing Director Aloke Singh said the airline continues to focus on expanding international routes from fast growing non metro and Tier II cities. The Varanasi–Bangkok service fits into this strategy by linking a culturally significant Indian city directly with a major Southeast Asian travel hub.

The airline also sees strong inbound potential, especially among Thai travelers interested in India’s spiritual heritage.

With the addition of this route, Air India Express further strengthens its presence in Thailand. The airline already operates flights from Bangkok to Bengaluru, Lucknow, Pune, and Surat, along with direct services between Hyderabad and Phuket.

Varanasi continues to be a key base for the airline. Air India Express currently operates over 70 weekly flights from the city to Bengaluru, Delhi, Mumbai, and Sharjah. It was also the first airline to launch international services from Varanasi, starting flights to Sharjah in 2015.

Within Uttar Pradesh, the airline also serves Ayodhya, Hindon, and Lucknow, supporting the state’s growing aviation and tourism footprint.

Aircraft and Onboard Experience

The Varanasi–Bangkok route will be operated using the Boeing 737-8, featuring Air India Express’ refreshed cabin product. Passengers can expect:

  • Improved seating and better legroom
  • In seat USB charging
  • Hot “Gourmair” meals
  • Modern interiors with Boeing Sky Interior mood lighting

The aircraft also carry the airline’s “Tales of India” tail art, showcasing Indian cultural themes inspired by regional crafts such as Banarasi weaving and Chikankari embroidery, adding a strong cultural identity to the flying experience.
