In a move set to significantly improve air travel options between India and China, IndiGo, India’s largest airline, and China Southern Airlines have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a codeshare partnership. The agreement, pending regulatory approval, is designed to expand route networks and offer smoother travel experiences for passengers flying between the two countries.
Expanded Flight Options Between India and China
Once implemented, this codeshare agreement will allow China Southern Airlines to sell seats on select IndiGo-operated flights within India. In return, IndiGo passengers will gain access to China Southern’s vast international network, especially flights connecting through the hub city of Guangzhou.
For travellers, this means easier access to a broader range of destinations across China and beyond, as well as simplified booking processes under a single ticket itinerary.
Seamless Travel Experience for Passengers
The partnership is expected to streamline air travel through coordinated flight schedules, unified check-in processes, and improved baggage handling between the two carriers. This collaboration aims to reduce layover times and offer more convenient connection options, particularly for business and leisure travellers looking for efficient transit between Indian and Chinese cities.
Specific codeshare routes and schedule details are expected to be announced in the coming months.
IndiGo’s Growing Commitment to the China Market
IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers emphasized the strategic importance of this partnership, highlighting the airline’s renewed focus on expanding its international footprint. Recently, IndiGo resumed its direct services between India and China, with daily non-stop flights between Delhi and Guangzhou and Kolkata and Guangzhou, launched in late October 2025 using Airbus A320neo aircraft.
Elbers noted that this new agreement represents another step forward in improving bilateral connectivity and enhancing travel convenience for passengers on both sides.
China Southern Airlines Sees Strong Growth Potential in India
Han Wensheng, President and CEO of China Southern Airlines, welcomed the partnership as a step toward deeper cooperation between the two nations. He pointed to India’s rapidly growing aviation market and increasing travel demand as key reasons for the alliance.
According to Wensheng, the two airlines can leverage their strengths to boost tourism, business travel, and cultural exchange between China and India, two of Asia’s largest and most influential economies.
IndiGo’s Expanding Network Through Global Codeshare Deals
This latest agreement with China Southern adds to IndiGo’s portfolio of international codeshare partnerships. The airline has existing arrangements with:
- KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, offering smoother access to Europe
- Jetstar Airways, opening up routes in Australia and New Zealand
- Malaysia Airlines, enhancing Southeast Asian connectivity
- Qantas, improving domestic travel within Australia
These partnerships help IndiGo provide international reach beyond its own operated routes, giving Indian travellers more global options with greater convenience.
Why This Partnership Matters
With travel demand between India and China starting to rebound after several years of disruption. This codeshare deal comes at a crucial time. The agreement not only increases route availability but also simplifies the travel process. Making it easier for people to fly between the two countries for work, tourism, or education.
For frequent fliers, the codeshare could mean:
- More direct and one-stop flights between major Indian and Chinese cities
- Easier bookings under a single itinerary
- Better connection timings and smoother layovers
- Enhanced travel options through two major airline networks
As both countries continue to strengthen economic and cultural ties. Improved air connectivity plays a vital role in supporting trade, tourism, and international collaboration.
